The library
building, an 8-story complex, is about 28,000 square feet in total
and was unveiled in the spring semester in 1994. The library, on the
5th and 6th floors of the building, includes 550 seats, and sectors
for books, reference periodicals, OPAC, readers, CD-ROM databases,
microforms, newspapers, an audio-visual viewing room, a recording
room, and several card-operated copying machines.
The library
currently contains more than 160,000 volumes, 730 current journal
titles, and 14 local newspapers. The library, which was computerized
in 1993, not only maintains open shelves, helps students to locate
materials, but also offers an interlibrary loan service and a reciprocal
"walk-in" lending service to students at National Tsing-Hua
University, National Chiao-Tung University, and National Hsinchu Teacher's
College. In addition, the library also provides various CD-ROM database
retrieval systems, including CD-ROM auto changer system which offers
on-line access to full-text CD-ROM reference resources and photo database.
The audio-visual
center consists of an audio-visual viewing room and a recording room.
The audio-visual viewing room has 8 sets of television and VCR while
the recording room has one 29-inch, hi-fi television, one laser disc
player, double-deck cassette tape recorders, and one VCR. This center,
with the help of state-of-the-art equipment, has collected all kinds
of audio-visual materials for researches and for promotion of audio-visual
education.
The administration
of the library is divided into four sections: (i) Acquisition and Cataloguing,
(ii) Information Services, (iii) Collection and Reader Services, and
(iv) Periodicals. With the strong support of the school, the library
has laid a solid foundation and has been expanding its services. The
library, making use of the advanced equipment to provide reference
assistance, plays an important role of information retrieval.
