~A Message from the President~

    The entire environment of high education in Taiwan, following several “educational reformations”, has been changed dramatically over recent years in terms of either quantity or quality. However, after further consideration of the nature of college education, it is our belief that the most important responsibility of college should be to cultivate the capability of students’ independent thinking as well as integrity, in addition to missions in sharing knowledge, pursuing truth and academic researches.

    Under the banner of “sunshine youth, green campus, cultural learning” and the philosophy of “teaching-by-individual-endowment”, Chung Hua University has been imbuing its students with professional knowledge in abundance and diversification through assiduous instructions, well-rounded facilities as well as meticulous personal care so that each of them may enjoy competitive edge in his/her later jobs or academic researches. In addition to academic teaching in classes, the university also emphasizes the formation of a pragmatism and responsible attitude in students through etiquette as well as ethic learning so that, besides growth in professional understanding, each student may set a matured, grand and contributable goal for his/her life.

    Whether a university can achieve excellence depends on how its visions are determined and development strategies carried out rather than if it is public or private owned. It is our belief that following conditions may have predetermined the eventual result:

1. Formation of a unique cultural tradition and style
2. Recruitment of outstanding faculties.
3. Education of students who succeed excellently in both study and behavior.
4. Active participation in public policies and affairs.
5. Application and promotion of innovative research accomplishment.
6. Expansion of placement services for students and help them affirmed in performance.

    A quite well basis has been set since the establishment of the Chung Hua University at 1990. From now on, it shall be a critical starting point for further development of the university in the future. To succeed in reaching objectives enumerated above, we have to invest much more efforts, mettle and resources available.

    With respect to the formation of unique tradition and style of the university, more attention should be paid to etiquette and moral education, comprehensive education, as well as extensive education, which are either insufficiently emphasized or overlooked by a great deal of other colleges. Besides, since the college education is not only the final but also the most important stage of a formal educational process before a student entering the society, the introduction of concepts regarding discipline and professional ethics should have been an inseparable portion of higher education in view of current societal disorders as well as malpractices in businesses.

    In relation to recruitment of outstanding faculty members, we shall do our utmost to provide better living circumstances as well as teaching and research environment to enlist the best teachers so that the university’s overall standard of teaching may be enhanced together with each individual instruction.

    Concerning active participation of public policies and affairs, we not only extend our full support and assistance to faculty members in this regard, but also encourage students to take part actively to show, on the one hand,, their care for the society and nation while to familiarize, on the other hand, themselves with industries and economic activities.

    Regarding application and promotion of innovative research results as well as expansion of student placement services, we shall establish broad cooperative relationships with both the government and the industries. For Example, enlisting high ranking government officials or business managers for part-time instructions; designment of specific academic programs by incorporating resources of local industries; and arrangement of on-the-spot practical training for students so that what are taught in classes can meet with what shall be required in the businesses. The best placement opportunities for students shall thus be developed through these gracious interactions between the university and the outside world.

    In addition, along with the upcoming era of global village, we also have a comprehensive plan as well as pragmatic approaches in expanding and strengthening international collaboration to facilitate the eventual achievement of our academic researches and training objectives. In other words, the establishment of cooperative relations between Chung Hua University and foreign universities as well as academic institutions is not on the nominal or numerical value but on the execution of meaningful and concrete collaboration items which benefit in real terms not only the faculties, but the students as well of the university. Among these pragmatic approaches are: double-degree programs with noted universities in Europe and USA; establishment of a collaborative platform among Taiwan, Hong Kong and Chinese mainland to promote bilateral connections across the Strait and among nations. All these in-progress and to-be-in-progress measures shall not only enlarge and share the university with international resources, but also refine and sublime global understanding and personal visions for both faculties and students. It is so important that we have to carry all these measures out with every effort.

    The Chung Hua University is situated in a scenic environment with beautiful campus views such as “silk cotton winding path”, “duck pond”, “bamboo shade secluded trail” and etc. Along with comprehensive electronic teaching equipments, well-stocked library, buildings of red bricks and gray tiles, as well as various art, cultural and recreational facilities, lives of both faculties and students in the university are not only rich but also colorful. This is really a wonderful place for studying.

    Both the academic research and learning are long and endless pursuit. It is hoped that each student of this peculiar university can carry with him/her the grand ambition of “extracting essence from generations of legacy kept in thousands of historic volumes” to make himself/herself a sound foundation for future development. After graduation, may every one of you step sturdily forward to write new and bright page not only for your personal endeavor but also for the university as well in the 21st century.
